End of Spring is peak moving season, and having a clear plan can make the difference between a stressful scramble and a smooth transition. At Decluttered™, we believe moving should feel intentional, not chaotic. Whether you’re relocating within Dallas Fort Worth in Texas, Rhode Island, Connecticut or Massachusetts, this detailed moving prep checklist will guide you from eight weeks out all the way to moving day.

Moving Prep Checklist: 8 Weeks Out to Moving Day - What to Do and When
Eight weeks before your move, focus on planning and decluttering before moving. Start purging storage areas, booking movers, and creating a simple moving binder or digital folder to keep everything organized.
At four to six weeks out, begin packing for a move by boxing up non essentials like seasonal items and décor.
Two weeks before your move, confirm logistics and start packing daily use items gradually. The final week is all about finishing touches, packing only essentials, and most importantly, rest.
Clients who follow a structured moving checklist often tell us they feel calm and in control on moving day because nothing feels rushed or forgotten.
Moving Logistics: Movers, Utilities, and Mail Forwarding
Early planning is key to a smooth move. Book your movers as soon as you have a confirmed date, especially during busy months like May when schedules fill quickly.
Make sure to set up or transfer utilities including electric, water, and internet so your new home is fully functional when you arrive. One of the most common issues we see is clients forgetting to transfer internet service and starting their first week without Wi Fi. An easy problem to avoid with proper planning.
Don’t forget to set up mail forwarding with USPS at least two weeks in advance and update your address for subscriptions, banking, and important services.

Packing Tips That Make Unpacking Easier
Packing isn’t just about getting items into boxes, it’s about setting yourself up for an easier transition.
When packing and organizing for a move, label boxes by both room and category instead of using general labels like miscellaneous. We recommend adding a few specific items to the label, like “grandma’s tea set” or “kids stuffed animals,” so you can quickly remember what’s inside.
Keep hardware and cords in labeled bags taped inside the corresponding box. Pack one “open first” box per room with essentials like paper towels, chargers, and basic tools.
This way, you’re not digging through multiple boxes late at night just to find your phone charger or your coffee maker.
Your Pre Move Decluttering Checklist
Before anything goes into a box, take time to declutter before moving.
Focus on:
Expired pantry and bathroom items
Unused kitchen tools
Clothes that no longer fit your lifestyle
Old paperwork
Broken or duplicate items
Ask yourself, “Would I buy this again for my new home?” If not, it’s time to let it go.
Many of our clients are surprised by how much lighter and more manageable packing feels once they remove items they no longer need.
Day Before and Moving Day Tips
The day before your move should feel intentional, not frantic. Finish packing, set aside essentials, confirm mover arrival times, and complete a final walkthrough of closets, drawers, and storage spaces.
On moving day, keep important items like documents, medications, and valuables with you. Eat breakfast, stay hydrated, and give yourself grace.
One of our favorite moving organization tips is using a color coded labeling system. Assign a color to each room - blue for kitchen, green for living room, yellow for the main bedroom—and place matching labels on boxes and create a key to reference to also set this up in the new space.
This helps both you and your movers quickly identify where everything belongs and keeps the day running efficiently.
